Melanie Espinola
Born and raised in Canada - Toronto, Ontario to be exact - by immigrated Portuguese parents. Having grown up with three brothers, I was quite the odd ball. (I already stood out from my red hair and height) I would be reading/collecting comics, collecting figures, drawing curvaceous women, wrestling and spreading fear in the hearts of all boys.
Truly a tomboy and of course that never settled in well with girlie’s in school! They all thought I was a lesbian. I remember drawing the X-men’s Mystique in an art binder of mine, and a peer I was sitting next to looked over pointed to it and freaked out screaming. ” Melanie’s drawing naked boobies on a girl! ” she said.
(For the record, I was not drawing NAKED boobies…they were clothed!)
From that day on all the boys would come to me asking for drawings ranging from video game characters-comics-cartoons. It was really neat to have that sense of celebrity at a young age. I knew that at that point I wanted to be an artist, not just any artist of course. I wanted to work in the comic industry. As the years went by my hobby continued and I would adapt to different styles quickly, expanding my knowledge in art history as well as working with different art mediums.
During my years of nursing my grandma, I began drawing again hoping it would ease my stress levels. My sanity and well being were draining each day so it was an excellent source to just get away for a little bit. I began posting art on online fan-sites, not because I was any good- but because I really loved drawing. Especially these characters I grew up with.
Since 2006 I’ve been making the brave leap from amature self-taught artist to pro and like every new artist I have plenty to learn from. I continue to expand in technique and in mind and hope one day to make my mark in comic history. I’ve made great friendships along the way, and have met some of the amazing men and women in the comic industry that have and keep inspiring me throughout the years and the years to come.
Thanks to everyone who’s helped me along the way, and continue to do so.
Without all of your support, I wouldn’t be as willing to make it out here on my own. Much love.
