The Inkwell Awards was set up by Bob Almond to promote the art of inking. In recent times publishers have been shying away from inkers, credits are often left off the front of books and reprints, and comics can often be found printed from the pencils only. This works if the penciler is of high quality, but more often than not the inclusion of an inker enhances the artistic experience. The role of the inker is a vital step in the overall creation of the comic book, as important as the penciler and colorist. A great inker can make a mediocre penciler look good and make a book shine.
