Ng, Steven
Cartoons, comic strips, and comic books have entertained me since I was a child. Growing up, my favorite creators were Carl Barks, Chuck Jones, and Charles Schulz. I've passed through phases of funny animals, superheroes, manga, black & white independents. My favorites today include Brad Bird, Hayao Miyazaki, Nick Park, Jeff Smith, Stan Sakai, and Adam Warren. Living in the San Francisco Bay area, I've been lucky to have good comic conventions close by. I led my brother Stuart and sister Nancy to San Francisco and met Jack Kirby and Sergio Aragones when we were still in high school. Now we have WonderCon and Super-con. The biggest comic show in the country takes place in San Diego and I go every year to have fun and help my brother's Stuart Ng Books. I drive delivery vans and trucks for the Alameda County Library so it's a natural fit.
Northern California is the home of the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco and the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa. I joined the CAM in 1993 and have had continuous membership. I've met Stan Lee, Charles Schulz, Marc Davis, Ward Kimball, and other great cartoonists at their programs. I joined ASIFA-SF, the local chapter of the international animated film society under Karl Cohen, and enjoyed their programs including talks by Robin Allan, Mike Barrier, and Tom Sito. Membership also got me into the screenings of Oscar-nominated animation shorts with their directors at the Lucasfilm theatre at the Presidio.
On my art collecting, I began by collecting autographs from my favorite artists and fell in love with the little drawings which some artists drew before signing their names. So I attend conventions in California and seek out artists. I have a few published covers and pages, but my collection is largely con sketches, commissions, prelimanary works, etc.

My brother Stuart deals in imported French comic albums, artist sketchbooks, out-of-print illustrated books, and some original art: He is the publisher of the American edition of Claire Wendling's Desk, Pierre Alary Sketchbook, and Sketchbook 2007. In 2009, Stuart published Claire Wendling's Daisies, Enjoy It While You Can, Kid: Sketchbook Cartoons by Eric Goldberg and A Different Stripe: Andreas Deja's Animal Sketchbook.
