Description

"...my imagination was busy in scenes of evil and despair."

Occasionally, I will come across a piece of original art that I have no nostalgic connection to that will just completely mesmerize me - Art (with a capital "A") for art's sake - ars gratia artis. This is one of those pieces.

I never thought that I "needed" a Frankenstein plate in my collection, but, this superb, melancholy depiction of Dr. Frankenstein in the rain changed my mind. If I was ever going to acquire a plate from Wrightson's magnum opus, it would have to be one that just blew my mind artistically, one where you could practically feel the blood, sweat, tears and heart that Wrightson painstakingly put into it. To me, that is what these plates are all about - showcasing the very, very pinnacle of Wrightson's artistic powers on a lifelong passion project unconstrained by deadlines, editors or collaborators. Whether these plates are published or not, whether they depict the Monster or not, etc. are all distant secondary and tertiary considerations for me. It's really all about finding an example that makes the heart race and that boggles the mind as you appreciate the staggering talent, skill and passion that went into it.

And so, I am utterly delighted to acquire this one for my collection, Wrightson at the very peak of his ability, drawing an evocative, powerful piece that makes you wonder "how on earth did he do that?" For me, this is one of the very finest illustrations of Wrightson's storied career.

This is one of the 44 plates originally published in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein: A Marvel Illustrated Novel, published by Marvel Comics in 1983. It is plate no. 14 (featured on page 65) from Chapter VII of the book. It was drawn to perfection by Wrightson in 1977.

Gene, this is the kind of work that makes all of us in the hobby take a step back and just drink in the thought and skill that went into creating something so wonderful. A tremendous illustration to be sure.

A fantastic example from the book. I actually own Wrightson's original composition for this plate (published in The Lost Frankenstein Pages), and it is framed with a print of the plate, in my dining room. As someone who also (finally) just acquired a finished original Frankenstein plate, allow me to offer you my hearty congratulations!!!

My dad is an art connoisseur. While he doesn't "get" comic art, he watches the YouTube show-and-tell videos to hear what collectors have to say, even if the art doesn't do much for him. The one exception: The Wrightson Frankenstein plate in John Butler's video. That got his attention. He was extremely complimentary about it. I'm sure he wouldn't be the only non-OA civilian who would be impressed by Wrightson at the height of his powers. Congrats!!

Something truly special happened on these plates. Wrightson's art channeled Booth and classic engravers works to create a defining high point in comic/illustration art. No one will ever top what Wrightson did on this labor of love.
