Action-packed page from the Phoenix vs Firelord fight scene that kicked off the first Shiar storyline of the X-Men.

This is first of all a great example of early Cockrum art, with expressive and energetic layouts, supported by Layton's thick inks (me loves lots of black).

But most of all, this page has a strong role in the Phoenix mythos. The battle scene is the first time Claremont decided to show the full power of the recently reborn Jean Grey (apparently, the display of power was supposed to be against Thor, but editorials opposed such choice). Claremont decided to use Phoenix sparingly in those early issues: not much had happened to her since her birth in 101. This was in my opinion very effective in adding to the drama around the character.

The thought balloon in panel 4 is an amazing testament to Claremont's plotting skills. The Dark Phoenix storyline is all there ("God in Heaven, what have I become?") and yet it will take another 30 issues or so before it reaches its conclusion. Priceless fusion of art and text.

Finally, from a visual point of view, this is the first depiction of the famous Phoenix effect, designed by Cockrum here and perfected by Byrne later (as was pointed out by a previous commentator on this piece).

OK, to be perfectly impartial, I am not too sure about the angle of Firelord's left leg in the first panel...a side effect of Phoenix's power?

Many, many thanks to Daniel Lang who was willing to listen to me and was just an amazing seller.

Awesome page--excellent Cockrum artwork but also such great writing by Claremont.  "Dear God in heaven, what have I become?"--such good stuff!

I must and will comment.  I am absolutely FLOORED and STUNNED that Daniel would sell/trade this page from his collection.  He has been the ultimate original green costumed-Phoenix collector over the years.  You must have been highly diligent and resolute in working with Daniel to acquire this key Phoenix page.  Your collection is definitely a great place to now show this gem of a page.  Since Daniel has removed his original posting, I am not sure if I was the one who posted this being the first 'Phoenix effect'.  It is indeed the first that Dave drew after he and Chris created her in X-Men 101.  He actually drew two 'Phoenix effect's from this issue - your page as the first and the second one was on page 30 when she created the Stargate through which the X-Men entered and did not appear again until the splash page of X-Men 107.  These early Cockrum X-Men pages are so difficult to come by now as they rarely leave collections unless the cash/trade price is at the 'right' (some may write 'stupid') departure price.  One can only look at the recent auctions to see the dearth of early Cockrum X-Men pages on the open auction market.  I know that this is a long post, but I have hearty congratulations to offer you in landing an incredible page.
