Description
This striking example of John Totleben's macabre imagination and abundant technique dates back to 1995, when John was working on the still- uncompleted "Hellhead: An Epic Poem For the Last Days of the Superhero." John mentioned that portions of "Hellhead" were rendered on the same Canson Mi-Tientes as this piece.
One of the qualities I find striking about this study is the absence of any pencil underdrawing; the image went directly to the page with the brush and carbon ink, and white highlights. The same astounding, organic linework of John's classic "Swamp Thing" inking remains evident in the white line and drybrush highlights. Dimensions: 8.5"x11," ink wash and white medium on Canson sepia acid-free Mi-Tientes pastel paper.
