Description

The offered item is the final page from Fantastic Four #55, the fan favorite Thing Vs. Silver Surfer battle issue and a prime example of Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott's work on the title at what many consider its pinnacle. Three of the Fantastic Four appear with the Surfer and this page is crackling with distinctive Kirby passages. From the Energizer Bolt in the second panel to the bizarre technology of the Jet-Cycle, this piece is filled with visuals that were as distinct to the heyday of Marvel's Silver Age as they were influential. This story was the Surfer's very first appearance after his epic introduction in the blockbuster trilogy of Fantastic Four #48-50 and qualifies as his 4th ever appearance. The Silver Surfer's developing relationship with the human race is nicely explored in this final page and it is a fine demonstration of character's philosophical tone. It is very obvious that the former herald of Galactus was still charting his place in the universe and his relationship to the FF. The Thing's question in the final panel of "What's gonna happen then?" must have certainly resonated in the minds of readers!
Original art from very early appearances of characters as significant as the Silver Surfer is rarely offered at auction, especially key Kirby/Sinnott Fantastic Four pages. The Silver Surfer is among the most important Marvel heroes introduced in the pages of the Fantastic Four. He would go on to have a run in the Silver Age that to this day has a near cult-like following and remains a significant player in Marvel's continuity today. This is certainly one of the finest and earliest Silver Surfer pages that has ever come available at auction. This large art has an image area of approximately 13" x 18". The small Silver Surfer in the 5th panel is an original production stat. This gallery showcases select pieces in the upcoming November
