Description

I just won this from Heritage. They had this to say about it:
"Bernie Wrightson Marvel Graphic Novel #22 Spider-Man: Hooky Splash Page 42 Original Art (Marvel, 1986). One of the biggest problems with powerful superheroes is dreaming up an opponent who is not only worthy, but actually seems dangerous. Spider-Man has his hands full with this imposing creature, expertly depicted by horror master Bernie Wrightson. This page from Marvel Graphic Novel #22 shows Spidey in some acrobatic follow-through action, and may be the best page from the book. This painted piece has an image area of 13" x 18". This page has minor whiteout along its border; otherwise, the art is in Excellent condition. This page was signed by Bernie Wrightson at the lower left, and it has been matted and framed to an overall size of 22" x 27". A copy of the book is included in this lot."
I can't begin to describe how ecstatic I am to have been able to add this to my collection. I vividly recall seeing full page adds for this book for months before it's release. I was so intrigued by Wrightson's cover with the monstrosity he had created. I had no idea who he was or what the story was; but I was anxiously awaiting it's release. The release date came and I was devastated to learn that my lowly little local comic shop hadn't ordered any copies, because nobody had requested any. I was totally clueless to that process. It had never occurred to me that I needed to request it, I had wrongfully assumed they would just have it. I relayed my sad story of woe to my mom and she called a comic shop in the "big city," Comics and Comics in Sacramento, and found that they did have it in stock. I don't even recall if it was a total surprise or if she told me where she was taking me, I just recall I was in awe of the Comics in Comics store when I arrived. I'd only ever been to the local Game Warden in Yuba City, up until that point, and was blown away by the sheer size and scope of the store and it's selection. I of course got my coveted copy of "Hooky," and in doing so spotted a quote from Stephen King on the back of a book on the same wire rack I had found "Hooky" on. It was a copy of Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" trade paper back. I had read Stephen Kings "Eyes of the Dragon" and was a fan of his works, so I got it too. It was my first Batman book and it effectively ruined me for all other Batman books; but that as they say is a whole different story.
Anyhow, this piece encapsulates a wonderful bit of my childhood. I've been looking to add a Wrightson piece from this book since I started collecting and had promised myself that only the right Wrightson or Vess Spider-Man piece would tempt me to add to my collection while I was in school. It was bittersweet when Heritage contacted me last month, informing me that this piece from my want list was going to be available. I just "knew" I couldn't afford it, that it would be bid up and out of my price range. I really can't quite believe that I was able to acquire it via Heritage; for merely the reserve!!! I almost didn't even bother bidding, because I just "knew" I wouldn't win it... so very, very nice to have been so very, very wrong!!!
