First of all, would you believe that the first time I saw this piece was on ebay IT DID NOT SELL??? I emailed the seller for the reserve price after the auction ended, and it sounded like a lot at the time, but probably not so much in today's market.

Anyway, when the auction ended, I desperately wanted to get this piece and I frantically began to try to find a way to make that happen. I started emailing and calling all my collector friends to see if there was any piece of mine they either wanted to buy or trade for this cover. Luckily, I found a friend who had been eyeing some things from my collection and also knew someone who lived within driving distance of the seller. When we finally came to terms, he sent his friend to pay for and pick up this piece. My friend then had it shipped out west to him and was able to hand deliver it to me in San Diego (where I lived at the time) when he came to pick up the pieces I was trading him.

The funniest part of this story is that when he got to my place, he really needed to go to the bathroom. So he put the piece down on the carpet and ran into the bathroom. While he was in there, I got down on my hands and knees and slowly opened the package. As soon as I laid eyes on the very first BWS piece of my 25 year collecting career, I was in love. When my friend finally came out of the bathroom, I'm sure the sight of me on my hands and knees, mouth open, and ass sticking up in the air, must've been hysterical. What's even funnier is that I must've stayed in that position for a good 10-15 minutes!

Of course whenever I look at the piece NOW, I don't do it on my hands and knees. But my love for this piece is still as strong as it was from the first moment I saw it.

My sincere thanks to Joe, Irving, Albert, and of course Mr. Barry Windsor-Smith!

(2/22/13) My thanks to fellow CAFer Troy Punswick for alerting me to the existence of a Life Death trade for which this cover art was also used. I have uploaded the trade cover to the ADDITIONAL IMAGES. Thanks Troy!

Stunning! A piece that epitomizes all of the masterful qualities of Barry Windsor-Smith. Lyrical, elegant, emotional, raw and powerful. Congrats.

I just finished browsing the whole of your collection, as I'm prone to do, and I must say this is my favorite piece... and considering the rest of your collection, that is really saying something!!

Thanks Tim, Ben, Walden, & Brent! As for YOU Jonathan, I don't know which is more impressive. That you actually went through my entire gallery all in one sitting, or that you actually were able to narrow it down to ONE favorite piece. I've been trying to do that for over 20 years and I can barely keep it down to my top TEN favorites, much less ONE! You're a better man than I, JM! =)

I'm sitting here and MY mouth is open. BWS is a genius and kudos for you for orchestrating an elaborate NBA-like trade between multiple teams! You're a MAD MAN! -K

No offense to Storm or Windsor-Smith, but after having the immense pleasure of viewing your collection in person, a few other pieces have risen in my esteem... your P. C. Russell Scarlet Witch piece is in a class by itself... not to mention that piece that was so horribly wronged by the publishing process, man I LOVE that one~:)

As incredible as this piece appears here, it really doesn't do the original justice... I'm such a sucker for the blueline pencils that are evident on the original... thanks for sharing it with me Eric, took my appreciation of it to a whole new level! ~:)

Well, considering that the printing process of comic covers in general usually SUCK, that wasn't too hard of a guess! LOL But I understand what you mean about this piece in particular. With certain pieces, it's even MORE painful to see them butchered that way!

Beyond classic. This one shows all of BWS's mastery. The anatomical dynamic, the old master classical touch, and line work that just makes the view dizzy with glee. What a winner.*

Hey, that's your fault for loading your Top 10 with Art Adams pieces! LOL! You could always bump one of those and put the BWS in its place! Thanks for the comment buddy!

After buying up 90% of the comics BWS has drawn since machine man he is fast becoming my favorite artist in 2013. This cover is spectacular Eric! I can't believe it didn't sell initially either but i'm glad you had the good fortune of acquiring it. Congrats!

Well, it was a costly trade my friend. Thinking back on it, I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger if it were any other piece. But I wanted a pure BWS so badly and I sort of figured I would never get a vintage Studio piece, or a vintage Gorblimey piece, or even a nice Conan piece. So I "settled" (I know, that's funny) for a more contemporary work. I gave up my (at the time) only two Perez covers, but since I was able to replace those with an even BETTER Perez cover, I have no regrets. Thanks for the comment bro!

It's nice that Marvel re-used this for the Life Death trade; but they really should have included the background for the reprint. The piece doesn't have near the visual impact without the tumultuous clouds brewing versus Storm's zen like state!

Agree and disagree. I agree with you that it doesn't have the same visual impact without the beautiful background. But for the reprint, I think from a marketing standpoint, it was a good idea to put a new spin on the familiar and classic image, just to distinguish between the original and the trade. Not that I care, since I do own the original. heh-heh!

A big Wow! I can't believe I missed this piece before. CAF has so many gems on it. This is such an iconic image. I was never an X-men fan but I did read the book for a year or so and this came out during that time. I remember the issue, the art and story well. My second favorite BWS piece of all time. Dinsdale!

Second favorite of all time? Wow! Thanks Jeff! I think that may be one of the nicest complements Iíve gotten on this piece. Iím really flattered. And I have to say that I absolutely agree with you about CAF being so full of great gems. Some of our newer collectors may be discouraged by this, thinking that theyíve missed out by starting so late. But I think that itís just the opposite. When you see all the great artwork on this site, it should make you realize that there is more than enough artwork for everyone to participate and enjoy this amazing hobby of ours. Anyway, thanks again for your wonderful comment.

Can't believe I never commented on this piece but your collection consists of the best examples of choice covers. Also, you always seem so modest of what you have when if you look at your overall collection, you are one of the heavy hitters! Makes me happy to see good humble people get great artwork! Oh and I absolutely love Mohawk Storm as that look is so iconic. Having BWS do a cover with her is an absolute dream!

Thank you very much for the kind words Leo. I still don't think I'm a heavy hitter. Just an old guy who kept his artwork for a really long time. The real heavy hitters are those guys out there who could probably buy my entire collection without batting an eye. These are the people who can buy pieces I can only dream about. By the way, I absolutely agree with you about Mohawk Storm. I think it's a great look for the character. Thanks again!
