Description

This is only the second panel page in my collection. It's not that I don't like panel pages or that I prefer splash/covers. It's just that it seems to me that finding a good panel page is much more difficult that finding a good splash/cover :
- a good splash has 1 good drawing whereas in a good panel page, ALL the drawingS need to be good. How many times have I found a panel page that seemed perfect at first and then I saw one panel that ruined it for me ???
- my passion is comic art, not illustration art, nor drawings. I love comic art !!! That means I love how the best comic artists know how to choose the right succession of panels, their perfect size, the ideal angles, close-ups, etc. The true masters of comic art like Kirby, Eisner, Miller and, yes, Jim Lee, are more than terrific pencillers : they know how to draw A STORY the best way.

This is why I tend to prefer a good panel page to a good splash/cover : it really shows the craft of the comics artists. So why THAT panel page ? How is it the perfect one for me ?

Jim Lee is one of my favorite artists ever. Hush is my favorite run of his. And the part that I prefer about Hush, what really gave it a heart, is the Batman-Catwoman relationship. Anyway, Batman being my favorite character and Catwoman his most interesting "partner", I can't be objective !
There are only 3 pages where they kiss, so it has not been easy to find one ! I can't thank enough my friend Chris for doing that hard work... and then for succombing to my daily harassment ;-)
I'd love to also get the splash right after that one, but that guy Jeph Loeb has it and I'm quite sure that, even if I sold all my pages, it still would not be enough to grab it away from him.

How often does a panel page tell a complete story ? Here our story begins with the largest panel/shot : the hero is lost in his thoughts and he's being followed from afar. In the second panel (also the second largest), Catwoman spectacularly interposes herself between him and what he was looking at / his thoughts. 3rd panel : with a widescreen shot, it shows the 2 characters together alone on the rooftop, close to the edge. The 3 following panels are exactly like a movie sequence with the last panel changing angles to give them some intimacy.
That first kiss between them is a very short story but it's still a full story and a perfectly told one at that !

Scott Williams also hit it out of the park with so many details, shadows and small strokes that really add to the page. I wish the scan could give justice to his unbelievable craft. Lee and Williams did not draw the most beautiful comics run of all time with Hush, but they sure did my favorite one comic art wise.

Like the Neal Adams' and Frank Miller's runs, I'm sure Hush will be recognized as one of the most popular Batman stories of his 75 years career. So yeah, I guess I'm very happy with that acquisition... even if it's "just" a panel page ;-) But it's the perfect page for me !

I don't know what I enjoyed more - viewing this gorgeous page or reading your description!! Your words encapsulates why I love this hobby so much. It's all about the passion we have for comics. This page obviously holds special meaning for you, and I'm glad it's in your home - although I'm also very surprised Chris parted with this gem. Congratulations, my friend.

Well, Chris did not really have a choice : I told him he should decide between selling it to me or having me in a tent in front of his door till he cracked ! Seriously, I believe something huge and Hush related came up for him, probably something dumb like a cover ;-)

Nice page. Are there really only 3 pages ever where the two kiss? (cause I have one which would mean there is only 1 other)

Yep, only 3 pages in the Hush run if I remember well. The other ones would be the splash and the one when they split right before the fight with Superman.

This is a perfect example of why I love panel page artwork. It flows from one panel to the next with ease and grace while telling the story with strictly visual cues. This is an excellent panel page done by artists at the top of their levels of creativity. Thank you for showing it off and the wonderful description attached to it.

Hi John, I've re-read the entire Hush run 1 million times and I can guarantee this is the first time they kiss AND also the only page they kiss before Jeph's splash. Best, Alex

This is one of those Hush pages in which the published version doesn’t do it justice. However, when you see the original to this piece, it totally blows you away. The top right panel alone could have been a cover, but to me, the best part is the bottom three panels. Really love this piece my friend!

Waaayyyy overdue in leaving a comment for this incredible piece of art. I too have become a very big fan of the "Hush" storyline by Mr. Lee. Leave it to say that I can't really add very much with all the other comments here. However, I will add that it's one of my personal favorite pages out of the book. And this one certainly deserved to be framed. Thanks for sharing, Alex.
