Description

This has been a long time coming. Sometimes you have to give up some special things to obtain pieces like this. You hate to lose things you cherish but when you see something so special and breath-taking like this you have to go for it. Steve Epting has chiseled his name into a granite list of great comics storytellers and Captain America creators with his acclaimed run on Ed Brubaker's Captain America. This is the cover to the best-selling Omnibus that collected the landmark first 25 issues with the culmination being the "Death" of Steve Rogers in issue #25. That story made headlines worldwide. What seemed like an atrocious marketing ploy by Marvel really wasn't. It was a superbly crafted story years in the making and fans would have to wait for the payoff which is still unfolding (and ties into another upcoming special pick-up). This book - and run - may very well be the finest Captain America story arc of all time. It already ranks up among the classic definitive runs by the masters such as Miller's Daredevil, Byrne's Fantastic Four and X-Men, and McFarlane's Spider-Man. Steve Epting elevated his game to a new level of greatness with such gritty, heroic portrayals of all the key characters in this masterwork of superhero spy espionage. His tonal wash technique which he skillfully mastered during this run would be the perfect style for the look of the book and the storyline - morphing back and forth from past to present in almost a mash-up of technicolor and film noir. This is why we collect. This is what sucks us in to the stories, lives and lifestyle of the medium, the hobby, the lore of these characters and their universe. It captures - for me - the best elements of the hero, one of my personal favorites. It is one of only a very few covers that show Captain America and Bucky in current Marvel continuity. It is a perfect bridge from the earliest days of the hero to the present. Linking him from Bucky and World War II right up to today with Sharon Carter and Nick Fury all while flanking him with the soldiers of the U.S. Military that the character has always held in great reverence and respect no matter who was writing or illustrating him. Personally for me this was not an easy pursuit. It was 5 years of waiting and asking and hoping that Steve would change his mind and relinquish one of his rare Captain America covers - now very prized and impossible to obtain. I was lucky enough to snag one of the other great covers in his run from issue #5 the moment I saw the solicitations for it.

July 13 update - Got an interesting update regarding this art from the series writer. Ed Brubaker himself told me via Twitter that this art was originally going to be used to announce Brubaker & Epting's run on Captain America. It predates all the other Captain America series art Epting did and was their very first collaboration.

Jason, I'm speechless, wow! This is truly a superb Epting masterpiece to rival anything I own. I purchased the Captain America Omnibus too and I tried to get this cover from Steve right after it came out. I offered him a small island in the Bahamas and he said no! Congrats on a true grail cover! Also, my prayers and best wishes to you and your dad in his health struggle! Enjoy this incredible cover! I hope to see it up close one day! It looks breathtaking!

While I honestly cannot relate to much of the excitement here (being neither a Cap fan nor a big Epting fan), I CAN relate to the health issues with your father, since I went through it with my dad only a few years ago. So I will leave it to others who want to congratulate you and celebrate this very personal acquisition. Instead, I'll just send out a prayer for your father, you, and your entire family in hopes that the news will be encouraging and the magic you speak of will become a reality. God bless.

How do you summarize a historic 25 issue run in one image? Well, if you're Steve Epting, you throw this beauty together and let the people marvel at the fantastic layout, energy and draftsmanship of the piece. Congratulations on another winner in your terrific collection - also, and much more importantly, best of luck with your family health issues.

Jason, through the countless e-mails to each other, I have known for years how much you have loved this awesome cover, and how much you have tried to figure out a way to snare this from the grasp of steve Epting. Well, to my absolute joy, I see you have done it my friend !!!!
This is a truly monumental piece, and I rank this piece right up there with the Jim Steranko cover to Captain America # 111. I own the omnibus that this cover adorns, and regularly marvel at Steve Epting's talent, and hope to see this one day in person. On another note, all the very best for your father in his health battles, and my prayers to you and all your family.

Jason, well, its about time you put this on your featured list of glorious Cap covers! ps: Incredible update to an already historic piece of Captain America art! What a story it was already - made only better now with Brubaker's input into the history of the cover!; ps:its only fitting that something this nice would become the cover to the Cap Omnibus tome which will always be used as the reference guide to Brubaker/Epting's historic run! wow, again!

What an epic, iconic (insert all overly-cliched superlatives here) piece of Captain America artwork. To have a piece, scratch that, possibly THE piece from such a great Cap run is truly worthy of grail status and a great cornerstone for your amazing collection. This was truly worth throwing the kitchen sink at to acquire. Congratulations.
