It's going to be very, very difficult for me to get too excited about anything else I get.

This is a special piece for me. Byrne/Austin might not have created Wolverine, but I feel they gave him his first real defining moment as a character with this issue. Wolverine alone against the Hellfire Club. Nuff said!!!!

I was thinking the other day that the Byrne/Austin/Claremont run is still the gold standard when it comes to the various X-books. No offense to the other creative teams....but the Hellfire Club story arc which led to the transformation of Jean Grey to Dark Phoenix, and of course her death in Final Fate of Phoenix are classics. To cap it off, this creative team did the Days of Future Past storyline before they left. It's a high note that IMHO still hasn't been reached since.

Needless to say, I owe a lifetime of thanks to Bill Woo for remembering how much I wanted this cover. Bill wasn't looking to sell this cover but my persistence finally won him over. Bill's one of the nicest guys in the hobby!!!!
Thanks again Bill for hooking me up with one of my personal favorites!!!!

Joe, I remember when this came out, a friend and I were talking excitedly about how we wished Wolverine would get his own comic book. While there have been times since then where I've thought about that conversation and thought, "Be careful what you wish for," it kind of sort of a little bit gives you an idea of the excitement that we fans felt after this book hit the stands. And it is such a GREAT cover! Byrne and Austen definitely delivered (and they knew it!). Congrats.

Wonderful cover Joe, surely the most iconic Wolverine cover ever. The Hellfire Club saga is one of the best comicbook storylines ever produced by Marvel and this cover captures so much of that storyline. Byrne-Austin, X-Men, nuff said!!

Ridiculous! Horrible X-Men cover! I mean come on, it's only got one team member, a bunch of henchmen, and boxes... Pfff, where's the rest of the team, where's the major villains, where's the super cool setting... Sorry Joe, this one just doesn't pass mustard. I'll be happy to save your collection from this eyesore. In all seriousness, your opinion and description is spot on... I can't imagine a better example. A definite high water mark. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Man, how long have we known each other now? I remember some of our earliest conversations after we first met and how you swore that someday you would have a cover from this historical Ucanny X-men run by Byrne and Austin. Well, it took you over a decade to make it happen, but you sure picked a good one buddy! Congratulations on making one of your big collecting dreams come true. I hope you are still enjoying this piece by the time your girls are grown and having kids of their own!

To me this is really the issue that launched Wolverine as a star character. Without that issue, comics history would have lost its most popular creation of those last 40 years. So how is it possible to define such a beautiful cover of THIS issue ? To me it's like the 1st recording of the Beatles, Warhol 1st major painting, etc. Congrats for now owning a major piece in the history of our pop culture !
