Description

Interestingly, when we talk about the cut off between the Golden Age and the Silver Age, it’s really the DC side of the house that sets the standard. The Marvel discussions are usually “pre-hero”, and then we’re talking Bronze Age versus Silver Age. Most people think it’s pretty clear, since Marvel created a mostly new group of heroes, while DC continued on with their big 3 of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, and then simply took the names of some of the Golden Age characters and recast them for a new generation. I think that’s selling DC woefully short.

Most agree that the Silver Age of comics started with the appearance of the Flash in Showcase #4 in 1956. The next “big” creation was Green Lantern. The Silver Age Green Lantern first appeared in “Showcase” #22 in 1959. Showcase was a try out book for new characters at DC. While it seems odd to think of Green Lantern as a new character, in 1959, that’s exactly what he was. The Silver Age Green Lantern, brought to life by writer John Broome, penciller Gil Kane, and inker Joe Giella (later with Murphy Anderson taking over inking chores), had almost nothing in common with his predecessor. I’m not sure that most people realize that issue #1 of Green Lantern was really the fourth issue, and that Showcase #22 was the issue with his origin introducing Abin Sur, Carol Ferris, the weakness to yellow, and the as yet unseen Guardians of the Galaxy.

John Broome was a popular writer in the Golden Age of comics, working on Green Lantern, the Flash, and the Justice Society of America. Later, in the Silver Age, he helped create among others, the Phantom Stranger and the Elongated Man with Carmine Infantino, and the Atomic Knights with Murphy Anderson. After the creation of the Silver Age Flash (by Julius Schwartz, Robert Kanigher, and Carmine Infantino), John was the first scripter of the Flash books. He went on to create many of Flash’s rogues gallery of villains. Later, again with Schwartz, the DC Editor in Chief at that time, and Gil Kane, he helped create the Green Lantern.

Gil Kane was born in 1920 as Eli Katz and grew into one of the most prolific comic artists of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Although he later went on to Marvel to handle the Amazing Spider-man and just about every character they could throw at him, he was forever known as a leader in the Silver Age, gaining most of his fame with DC’s Green Lantern and The Atom. I could go on and on about all of these legends, but this is an OA messaging board, so I’ll move quickly to the art.

There was recently a message string asking where did all of those Silver Age covers go? Well, I can’t tell you about all of them.

But, I can tell you where the cover to Green Lantern #22 by Gil Kane and Murphy Anderson is… It’s here

I was always a Marvel guy as a kid but of course I knew who the DC guys were also. I think the Green Lantern was always my favorite DC guy because the origen story was very Sci-Fi and the ring was just such a cool weapon. Thanks for sharing this really cool cover!

From somewhat humble beginnings, it seems like it would be pretty nice strolling down the halls of Chez Sonnenthal these days. From Marvel to DC, from the silver age to the present, you have really great representative pieces of essentially every great major character. This being just one of many spectacular examples. Assuming your eyes are open as you wander from the kitchen to the living room, you can't help but notice the influence Gil Kane had on Frank Miller, even from this early Gil Kane example. That curved back that GL sports here was very common in many DD scenes where he is running across the rooftops. Which just goes to show how great comic art spans generations. And if you had any doubt, you have to look no further than what's here. Congratulations on another great piece my friend.

Each time you update your gallery with another one of these classic Silve Age masterpieces (along with your wonderfully informative descriptions), it almost seems like you are taking it upon yourself to not only preserve, but also educate us all on the incredible history of this great medium. God bless you.
