San Diego Comic-Con International Coverage :: Day 03Splash Page Art Booth Camera
Photos are Below my Report! I woke up this morning finding it hard to believe that there were two days left to the show - my legs and feet were so sore and tired from all the walking. I can assure you, if you ever come to San Diego the one thing you have to bring is a **damn** comfortable pair of shoes. I could have done alot better in this department. If you were not aware, Saturday's are by far the busiest of the show, and the fact that Saturday night is the Masquerade Ball makes it a veritable feast of the senses. The aisles are packed with people and walking within the convention hall is really frustrating. Whenever I had to walk from one end of the show to the other I would go outside the hall and walk to the other end - it always saved alot of time. This morning people were lined up around the Convention hall waiting to get their one day ticket. Why people don't advance order their tickets I will never know. It must have taken some people hours to get into the hall. We got to the Con early again so we had to wait outside for a half hour. I got introduced to fellow Lister, and poster on this site, John Higashi. He has an amazing Star Wars collection of artist's sketches. Simply beautiful. After we got inside I decided to stay in the Splash Page Art Booth most of the day since I wanted to avoid the crowds, and that certainly proved to be a good idea because there was plenty of things going on at the booth. Early in the day I got to meet fellow Comicart-L members Allan Richardson and Steven Hendricks. Other noteworthy events included: - Brian Tidwell managed to get me a Phil Jimenez Dark Phoenix headsketch, and he got himself an amazing Emma Frost...Damn him! - George Perez was passing by and Brian Tidwell got his attention and he came over and talked to the both of us for a few minutes. He told us he could not wait for the Baltimore show since that would be the first Con after JLA/Avengers was out and how after that his schedule was going to lessen for a while - the guy needs a rest! - Sergio Aragones was passing through and said "hello!" - While Tim Bradstreet was in the booth his painter Grant Goleash hung out for a while so I got introduced to him. He is a fabulous colorist. - Grant Morrisson dropped by again to talk to Chris Weston. - Etienne (sp.?) dropped by as well, and made a deal with Brian. - Peter Doherty dropped off some incredible Grendel pieces for Mark to display during the Con. Enrico dropped by later in the day to check them out since he is a big Grendel fan. - Norm Rapmund came across the booth and showed us a page he had done working on Fantastic Four. Very nice. I forget the name of the artist he was inking, but the Thing looked really really cool. - Marcus Martin (artist on Bat-Girl Year One), who had dropped by the booth practically every day during the con, stopped by and did a sketch for Brian "Sketch-Hound" Tidwell. A very nice Bat-Girl looking out a window. I am sure you will see it soon enough. - I also got to see Phil Noto's first completed Con sketch, a fabulous Jean Grey/Phoenix piece. I apologize for not getting the guy's name who got it, but I know he posted a link to the noto-fans group. Phil was not doing any color work at the show, but this did not stop him from creating some amazing pieces. I stopped by the Illuminati Booth later that day to ask Phil where he was on his list and he assured me that he would get to my Emma sketch that night. My fingers are crossed! Also while at the booth I had the chance to chat with Sean Philips a little about working on the Kingpin mini-series he is doing with Klaus Janson inking his work. Sean showed me scans of his "pencils", which were really not done in pencil, but in his traditional blue marker. It was really cool to see his scans when compared with the book beside it to see how Janson finished Sean's work. It was also pretty cool to see the other 3 issues in the series. Later that day Brian brought back his completed sketch by Adam Hughes. A very fine Pirate Girl "Booty Call" that I am sure will please everyone. I also asked dropped by his table and he assured me that my sketch would be ready on Sunday as well. Fingers are crossed for that one too!! I also sat in on the first annual Comic Art Collectors chat put on by Brian Peck. Everything went pretty well, though there were some technical problems in the beginning for Brian (don't use a MAC!). It really took more than a half hour for things to go well.
