Comic Art News: Heritage Auctionsí Comics Department Breaks Weekly Auction Record

Collections, original art, Disney animation push new weekly standard beyond $422K

DALLAS, Texas (March 6, 2018) – For the second time in as many weeks, Heritage Auctions’ Comics department set a new record when its March 4 Sunday Internet Comics Auction yielded $422,238.16 in total sales.

The total broke the previous record, which was set just a week earlier, of $418,044.

“This auction had more than 50 comics from pedigree collections, original art by the likes of Neal Adams and Alex Raymond and a healthy selection of Disney animation drawings from the 1930s, so it is not surprising that it rang up a big total,” Heritage Comics Director of Operations Barry Sandoval said. “The best part is that we have plenty more quality material for the coming weeks, as well.”

Leading the way in the record-setting 991-lot sale was Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white to white pages, which realized $33,460. The lot continued a trend of popularity for the issue, which claimed three of the top four spots in the Feb. 25 weekly auction; the top-selling copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 in that auction brought $26,290.

Spider-Man made two more appearances on the list of the auction’s top 10 lots, as The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VG 4.0 Cream to off-white pages brought $6,572.50 andThe Amazing Spider-Man #50 (Marvel, 1967) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages went for $3,824.

Finishing second behind the Amazing Fantasy #15 was Larry Elmore TSR Worlds Annual #1 Cover Painting Original Art (DC, 1990), which was pursued by multiple bidders before selling for $9,560. The oil-on-pressboard image features characters and settings from TSR’s popular line of role-playing games and supplements, including Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance and Spelljammer.

The Flash raced into the sale’s top five lots when 16 bidders drove the final sale price of Showcase #4 The Flash (DC, 1956) CBCS Apparent VG- 3.5 Slight (A) Off-white to white pages up to $7,468.75. Considered by most to be the first Silver Age comic, the issue includes the origin and first appearance of the Silver Age Flash (Barry Allen), and is ranked fourth on Overstreet’s “Top 50 Silver Age Comics” list.

The career of Dracula star Bela Lugosi is chronicled in Drew Friedman National Lampoon #1/1986 “Bela Lugosi's Scariest Role” Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (National Lampoon, Inc., 1986), which was pursued by 21 bidders before ultimately going for $6,572.50. The 7-1/2-by-11-1/2-inch image, which is signed by Friedman in the lower margin, is done in a stipple technique over graphite on Bristol board.

Other top lots included, but were not limited to:

·         The Avengers #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC FN 6.0 Off-white to white pages: $4,302

·         Patrick Block Uncle Scrooge – World’s Richest Man Illustration Original Art (Walt Disney, undated): $3,346

·         Alex Raymond Rip Kirby Daily Original Art Comic Strip dated 11-24-54 (King Features Syndicate, 1954): $3,107

·         Green Lantern #1 (DC, 1960) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages: $3,107
