Dear Comic Art Fan,

Thanks to everyone who has bid on the Help the Hodges fundraiser! There are some collectors out there with some deep pockets judging by how high these bids have gotten. More items will be added to their list today including a drawing of Mickey Mouse from The Brave Little Tailor by Frank Thomas, one of Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men.

Other worthy causes are currently raising money with art auctions on eBay. CAF’s own Mike “Off-“ White has several pieces contributed to the Bridgewater (NJ) Police Benevolent Fund 174 including a sexy Catwoman pinup by Stephane Roux. Many people have also posted auctions and dedicated the proceeds to various Haiti disaster relief funds. Good luck and give till it hurts!!

Seattle, WA – January 26, 2010 – The Emerald City ComiCon (ECCC) is once again bringing back its popular MONSTERS & DAMES art book for 2010. It features almost fifty brand new pieces of art by some of the top illustrators in comics, as well as an amazing cover by Jo Chen (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8).

“We sold out of our entire run of the 2009 Monsters & Dames art book,” said ECCC organizer Jim Demonakos. “Thanks to that, and overwhelming feedback from our attendees, we’ve created another fantastic collection of monsters, dames, lady monsters and everything in between!”

This full-color, 9″x12″, 48-page hardcover is limited to only 850 individually numbered copies and features contributions from artists such as Tim Sale, Mike Allred, Darick Robertson, Whilce Portacio, Eric Basaldua, Aaron Lopresti, Philip Tan, Michael Golden, Carlos D’Anda, Brian Churilla, Gabriel Hardman, Jamie McKelvie, Jim Rugg, Timothy Green, Steve Rolston, Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, Mark Texeira and dozens more!

Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from this book benefits the Seattle Children’s Hospital, a premier child health care and pediatric center and recognized as one of the leading US hospitals for children.

The Eighth Annual Emerald City ComiCon will be taking place March 13-14, 2010 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in beautiful downtown Seattle, WA.

Premium Member of the Week :: Steve Rude

Steve Rude has been an influential artist in comics for over 30 years. He is best known for his co-creation of Nexus and The Moth. Comic Art Fans is honored to have him as a member of our community and the first professional creator to be featured in our newsletter.

1. What artists do you look to for inspiration?

Any artist, recent or long deceased, is open to my review.  Jack Kirby and my favored illustrators from the 50s always seem to be in prominence.

2. What are you favorite subjects to draw or paint?

These days it's been pretty females, usually in their twenties, which I'll paint or draw from life.

3. You’ve recently made a switch to focus on fine art painting, what was the impetus for this change?

After 30 years in the comics biz, I became disillusioned over what comics had turned into, Marvel in particular, as they struggled to proclaim their status as an "adult" medium.  I turned to self-publishing to ease my nausea, but in the end the costs did me in.

4. Which piece in your gallery is your favorite?

One of my preferences would be--well, it's hard to pick one.  Many of my comic-pages, recent commission drawings, and my various paintings of tastefully unclad females are all hanging around for your discerning inspection.

5. You’re appearing at the Boston Comic Con in April 2010, do you have any exclusive prints or art books that fans should look out for?

No exclusive prints but tons of other goodies.  All merchandise guaranteed with the Dude Stamp of Approval.  Anyone looking for anything zombie related or long beloved characters from the 60s moving onto the porn business, might wanna look elsewhere.
