Dear Comic Art Fan,

As you have undoubtedly heard by this point, one of the most influential comic artists of all time, Jean Giraud (perhaps better known by his nom de plume Moebius), passed away last weekend. Best known for his Western Blueberry, sci-fi epics like Arzach, and a two-issue Silver Surfer arc, the French artist's imagination and talent was revered by artists worldwide. Outside of comic books he worked as a designer on several films including Alien, Tron, The Abyss, and The Fifth Element. The industry has lost a master and CAF extends our condolences to his family and friends. Read his full obituary here...

See you next week.

ABOUT Big WOW! ComicFest

“Big Wow! ComicFest” is by all accounts, an “old fashioned” comic book convention, with a special emphasis on the love for comic books, art and, most importantly, the creators. With a focus on creators, art and art related events and, this year, in association with the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, an “Avengers” Museum show on the Big Wow! convention floor, Big Wow! will be a comic book lover’s dream scenario.

Big Wow! ComicFest will occur on May 19th & 20th, 2012, at the San Jose Convention Center. This year’s stunning guest list sets a new standard for talent at a single convention and includes Jim Lee, Kevin Nowlan, Juanjo Guarnido, Bernie Wrightson, Steve Niles, Tim Bradstreet, Bob Layton, Joe Jusko, Joe Linsner, Ryan Sook, Frank Cho, Aaron Lopresti, Toshio Maeda, Liam Sharp, Sergio Aragones and many, many more. Check out the CAF created website at for all the fun facts and information.

1. Please tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a professional with a high stress job.  I relax by going to the CAF site at least a few times per week.

2. Which piece in your gallery is your favorite?

My favorite piece is my David Finch / Matt Banning X-Men: Second Coming #1 end page splash of Bastion.  I'm so impressed with Finch art and this piece has it all.  Practically a full page splash with amazing detail in a dramatic pose.  I have scanned it several times but can never do justice to the detail compared to when you see it in person.

3. How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

I've been collecting about two years.  I was spending a fortune on CGC comic books and just realized I have only one copy of dozens even at a high grade.  I'm still building my Avengers 1 - 100 CGC collection but have stopped all other comic book collecting.  With original art you truly have a one of a kind piece.  I also enjoy framing my very best pieces and displaying them.  I love the always positive reaction comic art brings out from unsuspecting visitors.

4. How do you display/store your collection at home?

All of my collection is either stored in archival Itoya portfolios or displayed in an archival frame with UV glass.  High value pieces are kept in Itoya portfolios at the bank.

5. What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

My want list includes John and Sal Buscema Avengers pages preferably from the first 100 issues; I would love to have a page from Avengers #57. These Buscema brothers pages are often hard to find in very clean condition without all the staining and paste-ups so common on Marvel art from that era.  My ultimate grail is to one day own a Frank Miller Wolverine mini-series page, but the cost is just so prohibitive at this point in my life.  Other wants include a Dave Cockrum X-Men page and Ms. Marvel page.  As for modern art, David Finch.
