Dear Comic Art Fan,

The Eisner Awards were announced yesterday! Daredevil leads the pack with six nominations and Jim Henson's Tale of Sand follows close behind with five. Ballots with this year’s nominees will be going out in mid-April to comics creators, editors, publishers, and retailers. The results in all categories will be announced in a gala awards ceremony on the evening of Friday, July 13 at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Best of luck to all the nominees!

See you next week!

A Few Sample Lots:

Press Release:

The Boston Comic Con hosts their inaugural public auction of original comic book art at the 2012 show. The auction will be held on Saturday April 21, 2012 at 7pm at the Hynes Convention Center in Suite 102. This is your chance to own a piece of original art from some of the most notable comic book artists in the industry. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Mike Wieringo Scholarship for aspiring comic book artists.

In just a few short years, the Boston Comic Con (BCC) has burst onto the national scene as an old school convention for comic book purists, collectors, and art enthusiasts. In our efforts to further the BCC's reputation as a comic book art driven show, the BCC is holding its first annual original art auction. Our goal is to generate additional proceeds for the show in order to finance and improve our ever-expanding artist alley, as well as to contribute to a worthy comic book art related charity. As such many of our notable guest artists have chosen to support the BCC and the Mike Wieringo Scholarship by voluntarily donating a piece of their original art to the auction.

About The Mike Wieringo Scholarship:
This scholarship was established in memory of comic book artist Mike Wieringo for aspiring comic book artists studying sequential art at the Savannah College of Art and Design who can demonstrate not only the talent but the financial need. The scholarship recipient is chosen by a panel of comic book art professionals and close friends of Mike Wieringo.
About Boston Comic Con:
The Boston Comic Con is a 100% independently run comic book show committed to bringing the biggest and best comic creators to New England. Run by fans for fans, Boston Comic Con is not affiliated with any other convention tour or corporate interests. Hosting over 40,000 square feet of vendors selling comic books, toys, posters, trading cards, and other pop culture memorabilia, this is a destination event for geeks of any stripe. This year's convention will be held Saturday April 21st and Sunday April 22nd opening at 10:00 am each day at the Hynes Convention Center, 900 Boylston Street, Boston, MA. 1. Please tell us a little about yourself.

I'm an old time musician in the San Francisco Bay area and I also own and operate Callo Sign Company.

2. Which piece in your gallery is your favorite?

I've always claimed that page 2 from the Silver Surfer graphic novel by Kirby is, arguably, the greatest image of the Silver Surfer ever drawn. The pose and symmetry make it the ultimate pin-up type shot. However, I would still say my fave is page 1 from Silver Surfer #18. It has action, power and a huge image of the Surfer in a wild battle splash.

3. How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

I didn't realize how lucky I was at the time but I started collecting at the TOP. My first piece was a Silver Surfer page by Kirby that I bought right from Jack & Roz at a con in L.A. in '88. The next next time I bought art it was a month later at their home in Thousand Oaks, CA! I later wrote a story about my first trip to their house that was published in an early 'Kirby Collector' back in '97

4. How do you display/store your collection at home?

My walls are filled with comic art. If I have it in a portfolio that I only look at once every 4 months then it's probably not worth keeping.

5. What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

Fantastic Four #49 cover, X-Men #1 cover, Thor #83 cover, Hulk #1 cover, Amazing Fantasy #15 cover.  (might as well dream big)
