Dear Comic Art Fan,

Last week Third Coast Comics, a shop in Chicago, IL, hosted a Drink & Draw with several local creators as part of a charity fundraiser to benefit artist Ed Siemienkowicz who is battling cancer. The drawings done that evening have been posted to eBay with the proceeds to be donated towards his treatment. Contributors include Christian Alamy, Jenny Frison, Mike Norton, James O'Barr, Tim Seeley, Jill Thompson, and more. Many of the auctions end tomorrow (Friday December 12th) so check them out at the link...

See you next week!

1. Please tell us a little about yourself.

Well I’m a 41 year old mathematic and technology teacher, I have a beautiful wife and two incredible daughters. We live in Paris France.

I discovered comics when I was five with French magazines named “strange,” “titans,” or “nova,” in those I could read (or had my mother read) translated issues of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Daredevil, X-Men, and Fantastic four. Although I read European “bandes dessinées” as well, American comics were my favorite.

I discovered the “editions Deesse” comic shop when I was 16 and started collecting comics in English (the original editions).

2. Which piece in your gallery is your favorite?

That’s a hard question I love every single piece in my small collection (it’s like asking a father who’s his favorite child), yet I’d say the Iron Fist #14 page 1 by John Byrne. I remember when I was a child I went to the doctor for a vaccine and I was really afraid of the needle. So my mother bought me a French magazine and read me that Iron Fist story while we were in the waiting room. She explained me that I had to be very courageous and act like a super hero.

3. How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

I bought my first page in 1992 and I still own it (Punisher: War Zone #1 inner cover by John Romita Jr.), for almost ten years it was the only original art page I owned.

I decided collecting original art in 2000 when I realized there was many on eBay. I was tired of collecting comic books and always looking for some that I already owned but in better condition, but original art are unique that’s what I like.

Art collecting can be summarize in one sentence: “Sometime, you love something so much, you feel the need to own a little piece of it.”

4. How do you display/store your collection at home?

My collection stays in a portfolio locked in a safe. Yet I make very high definition Xerox copy of my pages on heavy board, once framed you can’t tell the difference.

5. What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

A John Buscema page on Avengers (inked by Tom Palmer)
A Barry Windsor Smith Weapon X page
A Green Arrow / Green Lantern page by Neal Adams
A Frank Miller Daredevil page
And, last but not least, a Nick Fury page by Jim Steranko
