Dear Comic Art Fan,

The original art session of the ComicLink Focused Auction will close this coming Tuesday November 1st.  The auction offers over 650 relatively affordable original art pieces, all sold without seller reserves!  Though time is getting short to make arrangements, ComicLink is still accepting consignments of both comic books and original artwork for the upcoming Fall Featured Auction which will launch on November 17th and close on December 8th. Interested parties can find details within ComicLink's auction schedule.  The auction will have a phenomenal selection of valuable original artwork and certified comic books.

See you next week!

1. Please tell us a little about yourself.

I am a Collector of mainly British comic art, generally from 1960s to 1970s. Major interest is comic art from Eagle Comic first run, and artists Frank Hampson, Keith Watson, Don Harley, Frank Humphris. I enjoy sharing my art on CAF, and also seeing the what everyone else has (especially when I find something that I wished I owned).

2. Which piece in your gallery is your favorite?

My favourite piece is my Episode 1 opening to the Dan Dare Red Moon Mystery story. To own an iconic piece, by what I consider the master artist of his time, is terrific. I had viewed this on Terry Doyle's CAF gallery for a while, and he was gracious enough to make it possible for me to own it. For anyone who does not know Frank Hampson's art, and story, I implore you to look in to this man, his studio  and the classic Dan Dare stories. You may find a lot of the progenitors to ideas you thought originated in Star Trek and Star Wars... only to find they were already in stories in a 1950s British boys' comic!

3. How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

I started collecting comic art as a byproduct of my decision to create my own full collection of first run Eagle comics. One day, on eBay, there happened to be the Keith Watson art for Eagle Comic 15 Issue 45 Page 16 (The Mushroom story). I bought it, and was fascinated by what you get to see when you see a piece "up close." Although it is a little faded, it has a superb Mekon image, and a classic 60s feel. The passion for more comic art kicked in. From my growing collections of Blackbow the Cheyenne comic art, by Frank Humphris, I have been able to see how low res printing on cheap paper stock can hide the true beauty and detail of the actual original.

4. How do you display/store your collection at home?

Most of my collections is stored in semiprofessional A3 art folders, with the standard acid free sleeves. I keep them out of the light, and now and then bring them out to view. Many of my pieces I have scanned, and printed and display these on my walls. All in reasonably cheap but professional looking frames. This preserves the originals, and I get to enjoy my art daily, without the terrifying expense of museum grade glass framing.

5. What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

If money were no object, and I could track them down, and they were for sale, my most wanted pieces would be from the Eagle comic Dan Dare stories by Frank Hampson or Keith Watson - in order of preference:

  1. Eagle comic Vol 8 issue 10 cover - Reign of the Robots story - panel 1 is the Mekon at his best
  2. Eagle comic Vol 9 Issue 1 cover - Reign of the Robots story - the Selektrobot transports are brilliant and iconic
  3. Eagle comic Vol 8 Issue 9 cover - Reign of the Robots story - Big Ben preserved, and hidden clues and secrets
  4. Eagle comic  Vol 1 Issue 38 page 2 - The Venus Story - Dan Dare transformation to an Atlantine - sort of
  5. Eagle comic  Vol 15 Issue 45 cover - The Mushroom... hang on a sec.. I did find it and buy it!
