Description

This is a huge piece for me both literally and figuratively. First the crass literal aspects. It is 30 x 40 inches without the frame and it easily the most I have ever spent on a single piece of artwork by a very wide margin.

As far as what this piece means to me, it is one of Bill's three seminal Elektra pieces. With Elektra being his most important, ground breaking and influential work, this is a piece worthy of a museum collection. (for the record, the other 2 pieces would be the cover to Elektra Assassin #1 and the black promotional poster for the series of which I own a recreation). I seem to recall this piece being published before it was used as the trade cover, perhaps in a promotional capacity as well.

I first saw this piece in NYC when visiting my friend Kasra. It was on his wall. I knew he had it but hadn't realized how large and demanding of attention it was until it was seen in person. It has been somewhere in my mind ever since. Over the last 5 years it was only a pipe dream to own a piece by my favorite artist of this calibre.

Bill Sienkiewicz is comics to me. He saved comics. His work on Moon Knight, New Mutants and Elektra Assassin opened the door to people like Muth, Williams, Kieth, Pratt and McKean. Their style in turn led to many of the independent and non-superhero genres we now take for granted. I remember the days when you went to a comic shop and either you read a superhero book or you went home without anything as there wasn't anything else out there. Perhaps the bigger comic shops had some independents but most places it was tights and capes or zip. I was about 15 or so when Elektra Assassin came out I had only been reading and collecting comics for a year or two. Then Elektra Assassin and Dark Knight Returns--paradigm shift. Watching Bill evolve on an almost monthly basis on New Mutants and Moon Knight and then essentially jumping the tank with Elektra Assassin. Wow... I still remember the excitement and feeling that something big was happening here. I remember a lot of people hated Bill's work. A lot of older collectors who I respected greatly had nothing good to say about his work but I knew good when I saw it. Thankfully a lot of others did too.

This piece has had 2 previous owners. Kevin Eastman and then Kasra. It is now safely on my wall where it will remain. I'll take some pictures of the space it is in when I finish getting up the adjacent art. Thank you to Kasra for the trust involved in passing the torch with a piece this personal on to the next collector. One day I will have to do the same but that will not be in the foreseeable future.

So, this is it. This is as good as it gets for me with Bill Sienkiewicz.

Can I finally say I am done with collecting Bill Sienkiewicz as there is no up from here? I could say it, but why would I:) I still love so much of what he does and did and will actively pursue other pieces, it is just that none will top this one.

Some close up pics in the additional images section. Also, this is framed with glass and so there is a bit of reflection on the glass in the piece, it couldn't be helped.

Placed 2nd in the cover category for best of CAF 2013. Thanks to all that voted.

I think ultimately, for most collectors, that's the target. A piece from which there could be no upgrade. It's especially satisfying when it's one of your favorite artists. Congratulations on reaching that point with Sienkiewicz. And you couldn't have picked it up from a cooler guy than Kaz.

It doesn't get better than this, huh? I've got some incredible Jimenez Jimenez pieces that say otherwise. I've no doubt you'll be begging me to take this piece off your hands in trade soon enough!

Holy cow! If I could own only one Sienkiewicz piece, this would be it. Iconic is the word I'd use to describe this piece. Huge congratulations!

I suppose if there were such thing as grails, this would be it for you. And it couldn't have gone to a more dedicated collector. Big congrats! Also: "A lot of older collectors who I respected greatly had nothing good to say about his work " Too bad this isn't the case today or the art could be obtained much more inexpensively.

Although this is my biggest and best Sienkiewicz, my grail has been in my collection for over 15 years. Still a Sienkiewicz, but a much more subtle piece - Marvel Fanfare Pin-up.

I love the form of this piece, from the elegance of Elektra to the comical nature of the rest of it. Not an image I'll get tired of visiting in your gallery, and I imagine the same will be for you gazing upon on it on your wall. Nice going Jeff!

Singlehandedly THE MOST MEMORABLE Image from the very memorable series and my Favorite Sienkiewicz Art PERIOD!!! I always hoped to make this mine but am very happy to see it in your hands, my friend. I can only imagine walking past it, stopping to take in its brilliance and smiling in utter satisfaction.

This is spectacular, Jeff - and it is so in the right hands. The thing I like most about this piece? The absolute bizarreness of the composition! Elektra, riding on the shoulders of a gun-wielding, tricycle-riding Garrett as she takes aim at a ballon with the image of Ken Wind emblazoned on it? Who else but Bill Sienkiewicz could have created something so singularly unique and beautiful? And, as important, who else was creating images like this at the time? Great stuff.

JEff, this piece couldn't be in better hands. When I think of THE Bill Sienkiewicz collector, I think of you. Congrats! On the screen it is amazing and I am sure in person even more so. To me Sienkiewicz is all about color, and this piece shows it off as well as his early Bob Peak influence. Just fantastic. Glad to hear you won't stop hunting for more great Bill S art.
