This is the second of four official model sheets done in the development of Pinocchio, this one entitled "REVISED MODEL SHEET". Like the first original version shown in my ALBERT HURTER GALLERY it is composed of cut images that were glued to a light board and then printed on photographic paper to be distributed to those working on the film. The board also has been hand inked "Pinocchio", "Copyright Walt Disney Prod." and "F-3" in the top border all which was hand lettered by Bob Jones who did the printing on the model sheets assembled when the model department was first started. Each image on this one is 6" to 7" and the overall board is approximately 22"x16". Pinocchio him self was the toughest. Twelve Disney artists worked over an eighteen month period before his final design was approved by Walt himself. In fact, the look and personalities of the other characters were either set or in the beginning stages of animation before the "star" of the film was ready to do his first scene. It wasn't until the "SECOND REVISED MODEL SHEET" that allowed Pinocchio to have gloved hands instead of his paddle hands we see here. Milt Kahl came up with the final design of a chubby little boy in a Tyrloean hat with a more na´ve and kind-hearted personality, one that would be mischievous, yet likeable. So on February 20th, 1939, the finalized model sheets were released and Pinocchio was on his way.
