F.R. (Frederic Rodrigo) Gruger (1871-1953) was considered by his illustration peers to be an artist’s artist. Gruger’s approach with a Wolff pencil and black/gray watercolor washes conveyed an immediacy to his drawing, as if the action was always just occurring. Gruger’s style was often copied, but there were few who could match the power of his line, figural attitude, and depth of form and space. Gruger began working for the Saturday Evening Post at the turn of the 20th century, and he contributed over 2700 illustrations to the magazine during his career with them. Gruger didn’t only work for the Post though. He contributed to all of the major magazines of the time, including Cosmopolitan, Harper’s, and Redbook.

I am very pleased to be able to offer a terrific original F.R. Gruger illustration that was published in the January 1, 1921 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. The piece accompanied Harry Leon Wilson’s story, “The Wrong Twin”, which was serialized in the pages of the magazine. The illustration pictures Judge Penniman and a beautiful young woman named Winona, as the judge exclaims, “Prize fighting!”, said the judge scornfully. “What’ll he be doing next? Never settles down to anything. Jack-of-all-trades and good at none.” The tones in the drawing are deeper than you can see in the scan, and the lighting is just beautiful. You can see some watercolor or gray ink wash laid down, to go along with Gruger’s use of the Wolff pencil. The illustration measures 13¾”x 11½”. There is a bit of surface paper loss along two edges, and a small surface paper tear at the lower left side. These are all pretty minor, and do not take away from the beauty of the illustration. Bargain-priced at $135.00 + 10.00 Priority shipping.
