Description

W.E. (William Ely) Hill (1887-1962) is known for his masterful black and white Sunday page, Among Us Mortals, sometimes referred to as the Hill Page. Hill’s feature began in 1916, starting out in the New York Tribune. It began syndication by the Chicago Tribune in 1922, and then jointly by the Chicago Tribune-New York Daily News from 1934 until it ended in 1960. Hill was a masterful observer of human beings, and each Sunday page was devoted to a particular slice of observation. In some ways, Hill’s page was a precursor to something like Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies. In terms of the artwork, there was no one doing pen and ink artwork in the newspapers like Hill. In all honestly, I’m amazed that Hill’s delicate hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling even showed up well on newsprint. To see these pages in person is to see a master at work. I’m quite pleased to offer an original Among Us Mortals Sunday page from January 27, 1952. Titled “TV Commercials”, Hill presents a time-capsule of early television commercials, some of which make you laugh, while others make you cringe. While five of the captions have been lost over the years, I do have a scan of the tearsheet present, which shows all of the text. The final image may be my favorite: “The babe who does the beer commercial is picked for winsomeness and rouguishness. She’s displaying these two charms as she says, ‘I love a wet, moist beer. That’s why my choice is Eichelbarger’s!” Now doesn’t that just roll right off the tongue? The details spent on the figures and tones is truly amazing, with lots of delicate penwork. This is also an unusual example, as Hill used litho crayon for three backgrounds, in an effort to set them off from the penwork. This is the only time I’ve seen that tonal work from him. The artwork is done on a lighter weight post-WWII paper. Hill drew on heavier stock before the war, but appears to have changed to this lighter stock during and afterwards. The page is HUGE, and measures 24”x 19”! You could paper a wall with this puppy. The page is in Fine condition, and you can see that some of the lettering has glue stains. Please check out the additional image, so that you can see all of the text. Great content by one of the masters. If you’re a fan of early television, this is the page for you. $250.00 + 20.00 shipping. The higher shipping cost is due to the large size of the original.
