Description

Hereís the skinny on the wonderful Annie (Lou) Rogers (1879-1952): The daughter of Luther Bailey Rogers and Mary Elizabeth Barker, was born in Patten, Maine. Her father had been a colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. After attending art school at the Massachusetts Art School and studying at the Art Students League in New York, Rogers became one of the country's leading cartoonists. Her work appeared in Judge, the Ladies' Home Journal, the New York Call and the New York Tribune. Her most well-known series of cartoons, Gimmicks, appeared in both black & white and color, in the pages of the Ladies' Home Journal during the 1920s.

A committed supporter of women's suffrage, Rogers also contributed cartoons to the Suffragist, Woman Citizen, Women Voter and the Woman's Journal. Additionally, Rogers took part in suffrage lecture tours, and was a well-known soap-box orator in Times Square.

Annie (Lou) Rogers wrote and illustrated two adventure books for children (The Rise of the Red Alders - 1928, and Ska-Denge - 1929), and in the 1930s hosted a weekly NBC radio program, Animal News Club.

Enough of the skinny. I had known of Rogersí work for years, but it wasnít until just a few years ago that I learned that Rogers was a woman. Fully realizing that she was working in a manís world, Rogers signed all of her work as ďLou RogersĒ. She did receive some early magazine coverage, as Rogers was considered something of an oddity. There simply were not many women working in the illustration and cartoon field at the time. Gimmicks was her big hit, and it was huge, running in the Ladies' Home Journal for many years.

Iím quite pleased to be able to offer a very scarce example of Annie (Lou) Rogersí work for the Ladies' Home Journal. This HUGE black and white Gimmicks page ran in the in the January 1925 issue of the LHJ. The piece measures 28Ēx 21ĺĒ, and features her wonderful little Gimmicks characters, along with some beautifully drawn animals. Iíll include a close-up of one scene so that you can see the wonderful details. Each of the five vignettes has been initialed by Rogers, and the artwork is in Fine condition, with some small and slight edge chipping at the lower left corner, outside of the art area. Rogersí work is very scarce, and Iíve only seen three pieces by her in nearly four decades of collecting. The cost of shipping this piece will be a bit higher, as the artwork is so large. $500.00 + 30.00 Priority shipping. Insurance will be $7.00 extra, if so desired. Fee-free PayPal, check or money order on this one. Thanks. SOLD!
