Description

I don’t often offer up examples of Frank King’s magnificent Gasoline Alley, but I’m in the process of paring down my collection, and am offering up two sweet consecutive daily strips from 1928. The late 20s and early 1930s are King’s best period, in the humblest opinion that I can muster. His drawing and figure work was at its peak, and his figures moved like the hips had been lubricated with oil. Simply beautiful stuff. Previous to the April 6, 1928 daily strip, on Tuesday, April 3rd to be exact, Avery accidentally crashed through Bill’s wooden garage door, smashing it to smithereens. Bill tells Avery that it was an accident, and that he shouldn’t worry about the cost, but Avery is insistent on paying. Bill says that it will likely cost 50 bucks to repair the door, but knowing that Avery is a cheapskate, and to teach him a lesson, he tells Avery that he can pay him a penny the first day, double it the second day, and so on for 30 days. Avery figures that he has a great bargain on his hands, so agrees, in front the Gasoline Alley gang. On this Friday daily strip, Avery sits down to start figuring the damages, and realizes that he’s been taken. After 30 days, he would owe Bill over five million bucks for that 50-dollar door. You can see King’s figuring of the total in the right-hand margin. In the next daily, from April 7, King shows the math, and Avery comes over to Bill to complain. The whole Alley gang is there, egging Avery on, with Bill telling him that he’s willing to halve the amount. You also have a seven year old Skeezix in the second strip, playing blind man’s bluff, running into a telephone pole in the last panel. This is a terrific pair of dailies, featuring the entire cast of Alley guys in the second strip. The strips measure approximately 7”x 23” each, and both are in solid Fine+ condition, with typical surface schmutz, finger prints, and pinholes. $750.00 for the pair, plus 22.00 Priority shipping and insurance. Fee-free PayPal, check or money order on this one please.
