Description

C.D. (Clarence David) Batchelor (1888-1977) was a longtime political cartoonist who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Batchelor spent the early part of his editorial cartooning career with the New York Post, and in 1931 switched to the New York Daily News, where he remained until 1969. I am quite pleased to offer a large and powerful WWII political cartoon by Batchelor, featuring war seductress characters that he used on rare occasion. These female figures, with voluptuous figures and skulls for heads, represent WWI and WWII, with the WWI character stating, “Mind what I tell you Millie. Always remember what mamma says: Never give a sucker an even break.” The cartoon is titled “Telling her the facts of life”, and you can see that the figure representing WWII is holding a portrait signed by Uncle Sam. Interestingly, the text inscribed on the top of the couch, “Amor Omnia Vincit”, translates to “Love Conquers All”.

You can see by the additional images here, that Batchelor’s 1937 Pulitzer Prize winning cartoon also featured this war seductress character, as she tells the man labeled “Any European Youth”, “Come on in. I’ll treat you right. I used to know your daddy”. Batchelor later used the same characters in an Army publication meant to help warn servicemen about the dangers of social diseases.

This is powerful stuff, with bold, expressive drawing, combined with startling imagery. The piece was either drawn on heavy illustration board, or was laid down onto the board. In any event, there is very slight discoloration from a previous framing. The artwork is in solid Fine condition, with only two small spots of minor discoloration. The artwork measures 20¼”x 15¼”. While Batchelor’s work cannot be considered rare, this is the most powerful original by him that I’ve ever run across. $325.00 + 19.00 Priority shipping. SOLD!
