Description

"He was the GREATEST Hero of them all."

A moment of silence, please...
This beautiful double-page splash is from LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (3rd series) #38 (Sept. 1987), pages 26 and 27 featuring the saddest day in Legion history--the Funeral of Superboy. In this unforgettable issue, Superboy was killed by the Time Trapper. This page was drawn on "twice-up" bristol board by Greg LaRocque (pencils), Mike DeCarlo (inks) and Arne Starr (inking assistance). This page is HUGE and measures a whopping 20" X 24 1/2". Needless to say, this is my "Grail" splash page.

SUPERBOY created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster - 1st appearance - Action Comics #1 (June 1938) and/or More Fun Comics #101 (Jan. - Feb. 1945).

SUPERBOY and THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES is copyright (c) & trademark DC Comics, Inc.

I'm not a LEGION fan, but this is just too fantastic to pass by. Congrats on an amazing Greg LaRocque sample.

It is magnificent. No matter how many versions of the Legion or Superboy there are, this story and this particular piece of art was a turning point for many of us. Thanks for posting it on CAF, so that from time to time,we too can visit old friends and pay our respect..

Growing up I bought anything Curt Swan drew & anything featuring Superboy. I was very lucky to have drawn the Legion & it remains my favorite book that I have worked on. I found this story & scene difficult to create but am very proud of how it turned out. Thanks for sharing Fred ;-)
