Description
A3, mixed media including watercolours and pencils. Prelim included as an additional image.

When I was five years old my dad developed MS. He was forced out of his job and my mom had to go back to work to make ends meet. With my dad as my primary care giver, we developed new routines, one of which was spending Wednesday afternoons at the local public library. To my great delight, I discovered The Smurfs, Asterix & Obelix and, most especially Tintin.

I would spend those afternoons sitting on the floor of the stacks reading and re-reading Tintin. If all of the English editions were checked out, I would do my poor best to read the French editions. I was transported to a wonderful world of adventure that was nothing short of marvelous!

When my daughter was old enough, I introduced her to Tintin. Now a teenager, she recently took our collection down off the shelf and reread the series, which inspired me to do the same. It also got me thinking about a commission opportunity.

Jared struck me as a great choice for this commission. It needed to include Snowy; I wanted it to have that sense of urgency when Tintin is on the case; and, I wanted it to capture some of the richness of Herge’s backgrounds. I’ve included some of the images that I shared with Jared for inspiration.

When the finished art arrived, I opened it and experienced that wonderful sense of delight and joy that transported me right back to the stacks of the local library.

Jared did an amazing job with this piece. It's filled with charm and lovely color, and exactly that sense of adventure you want to feel when thinking about Tintin and Snowy and the journeys they go on in the books! Congrats, special piece. Also, the story you shared about your personal connection to the material through your father and now your daughter in addition to your own fandom really hit home with me, thank you for sharing that. I was introduced to "comics" through Tintin and Asterix by my grandfather so this material holds a special place in my heart as well.

Thanks for your kind words, Kavi.  I'm glad to hear that my story resonates with you.  I suspect that many in our community had similar introductions to comics through Tintin.

I, too, discovered The Smurfs, Asterix & Obelix and Tintin as a kid going to the local public library. I love that you passed the joy of Tin Tin on to your daughter. I have to say, Andrew, this is probably the nicest piece of art I've seen on CAF in 2026 so far! The classic camera tilt to dramatize the scene, the spectacular Tin Tin and Snowy figurework looks effortless, the blue highlights coming off the man on the right and off Tin tin, the choice of color palette and application of paints....They all coalesce into an incredibly beautiful piece of work. Stunning!

That's very high praise, Ruben.  Thank you for the kind words.  Jared told me how much he enjoyed working on this commission and I think that level of care really shows in the final artwork!

The backgrounds are just fantastic!  It could be a complete work of art by itself.

Nice story, thanks for the read! And a charming image - I love the old European street with the lamp and the messy cables.

There are few better artists you could have selected, I think. This piece came out amazing. Congrats, and thank you for the story behind the art.
