Description
Arguably the most rare comic book Frank Thorne ever did, The Far Out Green Super Cool was a promotional comic produced by the Social Welfare Research Foundation for fourth, fifth, and sixth grade children in New Jersey in the early seventies. Thorne wrote and drew the stories, with each issue focused on a different topic pertaining to juvenile law. Only four issues were produced, one a year, before the Foundation ran out of funding.

Super Cool is a superhero, complete with a blue cape, a green complexion, and an “SC” symbol on his chest. He can fly and he has a “laser projection ring” that allows him to see events taking place elsewhere. He has buttons on his gloves that allow him (and others) to turn invisible and walk through walls. And he can project a beam from his finger that can burn drugs and melt guns. He also has a Super Cool Car that he can control remotely from a button on his belt, and it can not only ride on the road, but also fly through the air. His appearance, abilities, and gadgets are an amalgam of classic comic book superheroes of the day.

As with many of Thorne's projects, he not only penciled and inked the stories, but he colored them as well. This is the color guide to page 10 of issue 4, featuring Super Cool and the reformed villain of the issue, the Blob. It is approximately 7 x 10 inches, original watercolor painting and color notations on a black and white stat of the artwork. A fascinating piece from the artist best known for drawing Red Sonja.

[I have another color guide page from this story. Ask if you are interested and we can work a package deal on both.]
