The right side of this image is a full size, high quality copy of my commission that Kirk Jarvinen made and then hand colored for me. The original black and white line art remains untouched.
As soon as former X-Factor, Aquaman and Green Lantern artist
Kirk Jarvinen unveiled his brilliant
cover reinterpretation of Marvel Two in One # 19 (with the Thing and Tigra) back in 2006, I was instantly plotting what other book(s) from the MTIO series Kirk could re-visit for my collection.
As was the case with the Tigra cover, Kirk came to me with the suggestion of reinterpreting the cover of Marvel Two in One # 34 featuring the ever-lovin' idol of millions and Nighthawk from the Defenders (originally drawn by John Buscema). Kirk picked MTIO 34 because he thought the tentacled monster from the issue would be fun to draw.
I really love the gun sight design Kirk came up with. It reminds me a little bit of the Gil Kane / John Romita Sr Spider-Man # 129 cover with the Punisher on it and the Mike Zeck Captain America # 286 cover with Deathlok taking aim at Cap.
I also get a real kick out of the fact that Kirk put so many story-specific elements into his drawing. The Thing pouring water from a giant bell, the burning hospital, the little girls with their dolls, and the rifle-toting hunters are all from the original comic book.
My thanks to Kirk for completing this drawing under very trying personal circumstances.
