I was able to connect with the original owner of this piece, fellow CAFer David Sarley. He was kind enough to give this description of where and when this piece came to be. BTW - This piece is posted on Mike Zeck's website.

Hi. I believe it was summer of 1980. Maplecon was an annual Convention in Ottawa Canada and was quite popular in its time. Mike was displaying a few sketches he had done for the con and was sitting with Gene Day. The Spiderman - Doc Octopus pic, elsewhere in my gallery, was done by them a my request. The Captain America in my gallery was done at the same con and is dated. George Perez and Joe Rubinstein where there as well. Sorry for the fading. It was displayed (pinned- shudder) without protection. I was new and was ignorant of how to display and store. Hope you enjoy it for a long time. David Sarley

There's no indication on the paper when this was done. The paper is yellowed with age and I know that Michael Zeck hasn't accepted commissions for a while.

Zeck, Gulacy, and the late Gene Day. The only artists that should have been allowed to draw this character.
