I'm not a "Holy Grail" person, but this one comes close. Set aside the inker arguments and the condition concerns, this is a great image from the King. I remember waiting for this issue to come out and really wondering if Thor would find a way to stop Mangog.

It doesn't show on the scan, but it seems there was detailing that Jack put on the sheath of the Odinsword that Vince decided wasn't essential and didn't ink. Look at the image with that in mind and imagine how cool that would have been!

I always get a kick when I see the cover art to a comic I picked up off the shelf at the local downtown drug store with the dimes and pennies I had managed to save up for that week. (As kicks go, though, this one's a 60-yard field goal.)

Killer cover! The Mangog issues of Thor were completely thrilling and breathtaking as a kid. Imagine being a first grader or kindergartner and arriving at the splash page where Kirby's Mangog appears before Ulik for the first time (a few issues before this)! Jack was more than hitting on all cylinders at this stage, he was tapping into some unnameable cosmic force all his own!
