Frank Hoar (1909-1976), who signed his work “Acanthus”, was a long time contributor to many British publications, including Punch. His work was known for its assured line and use of architectural elements. Being a trained architect, Hoar enjoyed bringing elements of that world into his cartoons. This is one of two watercolors of boats in Martigues, painted by Hoar in 1950. Even in this relatively flat use of space, you can see Hoar's knowledge of structure.
