Description
Charles (C.A.) Voight (1887-1947) was one of the early great pen men in comic strips. With his strip Petey, originally created for the Boston Traveler in 1908, Voight brought good humor together with wonderful, juicy drawing. Voight was especially noted for his drawings of beautiful women, which could be seen his Sunday-only comic strip, Betty, created in 1920. During the 23 year run of Betty, Voight also did a good deal of advertising cartooning, including ads for Rinso soap. When Betty ended, Voight turned to comic books, working for Tally-Ho and Prize Comics.

The cartoon is the only political/editorial piece that I've seen by Voight, and I'm figuring the time period to be around 1905-1909, when Voight first worked for the New York Telegram, before going to the Boston Traveler for a short while. Those are the only two instances I can find of Voight doing political or editorial work.

Concept-wise, Voight seems to be taking a page out of The Masses book, which featured work by the likes of Art Young, but content-wise, the character with the whip sure seems to be a nod towards Homer Davenport's depiction of the Republican political kingmaker, Mark Hanna. Davenport often depicted Hanna as wearing a suit with a dollar sign pattern. Whatever the case, the pen work is pretty phenomenal.
If anyone has the skinny on this piece, I'd sure love to hear about it. There are no editorial markings on the piece, but there is a different variation of the image in pencil on the back.

Penwork is indeed incredible. Crazy coat and face. The crowd is done to give the sense of faceless mass of victims of greed and injustice. Wonderful piece and fabulous writeup.
