Description
I grew up reading Man of Steel. Not since Swan has anyone captured the look of Superman. Byrne's Superman is the character I see when I shut my eyes. Here, JB draws him in the same style he used when penning MOS.

Really nice piece. I agree that not since Curt Swan has anyone captured the look, the feel, the sheer excitement of Superman as John Byrne has. It is a pity that his recent Action run was ruined by the inks. I felt like I was watching Colletta ruin Kirby's gorgeous pencils on the Fourth World or Thor (compare the two, on both artists, sometime -- over at Byrne's website and in the fantastic Jack Kirby Collector). I guess everyone here knows that (about the inking) and has varying opinions about Vinnie -- I understand the man had to make a living and work fast but to a fan of Kirby is is almost sacrilege to ink over those kinds of pencils the way he did. I feel the same way about Nelson's inks on Action. I wish Giordano had done the inks on Man of Steel -- John says a lot of it was farmed out to other inkers even though credited to Dick. Great work of art Ari -- you have excellent taste.

Lots of fun to be had here! I like the light, breezy feel of this piece, an untroubled Supes ( ;) ) having a good time. Excellent piece!

That's exactly how Superman should always be remembered. The perfect picture to tell who Superman is. In fact I think there was an old image of him flying with a similar pose and a railroad in the background...

Byrne is the greatest living Superman artist. Shuster...Boring...Swan... Byrne! The evolution of the world's greatest hero in 4 words.

Aric, your Byrne commissions are always fun to come and visit. (I apologize for not commenting on one until now.) This one does remind me of that great splash from Man of Steel #1. His Superman stories may be out of favor at the moment, but its all cyclical.
