Gary Panter does these great word association drawings. You give him the words and he gives you the association. Philip Guston is one of my favorite artists and knowing that Herriman was a favorite cartoonist of his made this combination perfect.

July 4, 2024 UPDATE: After 20 years, I've finally popped this wonderful piece out of its frame in order to make a better, more accurate scan. Now the cartoon is happily back up on my wall.
