If the Great Machine could speak to and command machines, it stands to reason that his enemy could do the same with animals. Pherson was a sound man who was trying to figure out how to replicate the power of the Great Machine's voice. This page from the "Ex Machina Special" shows Pherson in his studio before the event that would grant him his powers. I'm not crazy about the coloring of the final page (see comparison above) but the original art itself looks gorgeous. Is it just me or does every Chris Sprouse character have great hair?
