Description
John Byrne did a rough pencil layout for this piece; Tom Palmer light boxed the rough onto Craftint duo-shade board, and did a fantastic job of finishing it in ink and wash. (The original is over sized). Tom Palmer gave the following reply when asked why the cover was done this way; "I know collectors are caught up in the provenance of a given piece of artwork, or at least wanting to know the reasons something was done. It wasn't done to drive them crazy (light boxing Byrne's pencils), it was done for expediency, or practical reasons. For a different look, this Surfer cover, and some other pages in this issue, were transferred by light box to Craftint Duo-Tone board. This allowed two halftone line patterns to be revealed using two different solutions, giving the artwork a halftone look in line, something comic books didn't have at the time. I've done it other times, but it is labor intensive, and I slowed down using it. Now a days you don't need to do this, I use gray wash if I want because comics are magazines now and with no restrictions." In a follow up with John Byrne, his recollection was that it was Tom's decision, perhaps from an editorial request, to have the cover and splash done using the different technique. What ever the case, this is the original finished cover (and only finished cover) art for the 1982 Silver Surfer One-Shot! CLASSIC! The cover is also signed by John Byrne, Tom Palmer, and Stan Lee.

Exceptional! Byrne/Palmer worked so well together, especially on this issue in particular I remember this being in Jim Warden's hands.I don't know how you got him to let it go but I salute you. This is a superior piece of original art.

Very Cool! I was disappointed back in 82, Byrne & Palmer weren't doing a monthly Surfer! Thanks for sharing this cosmic treasure with the rest of us! Beautiful piece, I miss the use of zip-a-tone alot.

Credit goes to Tom Palmer, Byrne "only" did a rough pencil

I was lucky enough to see this piece in person the day it was signed by Stan Lee. Very cool and historic piece.
