Description
My first page of Sandman art:

Select members of the Dreaming coming together to venture off to the Wake; Dream of the Endless has fallen. Pictured here is the Golum constructed by the rest of the Endless, who leads Lucien the Librarian, Cain, Abel and Goldie the Gargoyle to the Wake of their fallen master/friend.
Leading the pack, are the Golum and Lucien.
Golum: Sir Librarian-- the Young Lord in white... Who WAS he?
Lucien: He is Dream of the Endless.
This confuses him, the Golum continues: He is...? But the WAKE. The CEREMONY. I was told that Dream of the Endless was no more.
Solemnly Lucien responds: Yes.
Golum: So... WHO died?
From the back of the party, Abel chimes in: Nobody died. How can you kill an idea? How can you kill the personification of an action?
This too confuses the Golum: Then WHAT died? WHO ARE YOU mourning?
As if speaking out of turn, Abel replies: a PUH- POINT OF VIEW.
Cain is furious: SECRETS! You told another SECRET!
Cain is going to do what he has done to Abel so many times throughout the past; the crime that he was punished fratricide. He grabs a rock ready to start bludgeoning his brother about the head: You-- you WITLESS, jelly-bellied gusset-sniffing DUNCE! I ought to--
And yet the action is abruptly stopped, not as a means of coming to Abel's defense, Lucien puts a hand on Cains shoulder and says: Cain... Not today.
This is a day for more serious matters, as the group continues on their way.

Signed as Michael Zulli, along the bottom edge of the art, in silver marker.

"The Wake" was extremely satisfying on so many different levels, as is this page. Congratulations on adding it to your collection.

Love Zulli's work on this. I need to scan the pieces I have without the overlays since the line work he did was really extraordinary. Congrats!
