Description
Such a terrific example of Clare Briggs' work. This 1917 The Days of Real Sport features a reticent Skinnay, as the boys try to get him to come out and play soldier. For those who aren't familiar with Briggs' panel cartoons, Skinnay is never seen on camera, and Briggs would usually depict a boy yelling "Oh, Skin-nay!" for him. So in this panel, we see the elusive Skinnay's foot and hand.
Briggs captioned the cartoon, "Skin-nay's Coming Over", which refers to the famous WWI song, "Over There". Note the WWI enlistment poster on the bit of fence, with the flag flying overhead. A wonderful and wonderfully patriotic piece, with all of the elements of a terrific Briggs cartoon.
Addendum: I found a different version of the cartoon in one of the volumes of the "Memorial Edition: The Drawings of Clare Briggs". It's pictured below.
