*Convention Sketchbook, 2011-Present: 'AD&D, 1st Ed. MONSTER MANUAL'
Back in 2008, I had thought about starting a sketchbook with a more general 'Here There Be Monsters!' theme, but never followed through -- and then circumstances required that I put my collecting on hiatus for several years.
Sometime in the Spring of 2011, I happened to be reminiscing about old-school Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) on another message board that I frequented (now defunct), which inspired me to unbox the old sourcebooks and gaming modules.
As I sat there, revisiting the familiar names and statistics (from Aerial Servant to Zombie), I found myself grinning more broadly with every page that I turned. Granted, some of the artwork presented within TSR's 1st Ed. Monster Manual is better than others, but I still have a nostalgic fondness for all those old line drawings by Erol Otus, Dave Trampier, David Sutherland et al.
And that's when I realized what a great theme this would be for a new convention sketchbook: To have ALL of the monsters reinterpreted by today's talented artists . . . So let's get started.
