Frank Willard (1893-1958) was one of the original kings of the lowbrow comic strip. His Moon Mullins followed in the footsteps of Billy DeBeck's Barney Google, as the audience followed the exploits of the sometimes-scallywag main character. Moon could be oafish and unsavory, but he was always drawn wonderfully, as was the rest of the cast, featuring Emmy Schmaltz, Kayo, Lord Plushbottom, and Egypt, Moon's flapper girlfriend.
