Picking an artist for this year's card was fairly easy. Tom Derenick had opened up his commission list and I asked him if was willing to do my annual greeting. Tom said yes and from there it was simply a matter of picking an appropriate image.
Most of the original cards I have sent out over the last 9 years have been influenced by previous cover images in some manner or form. So this really was a matter of picking the right cover that suited Tom's impressive talents and could be appropriately tweaked.
I found a cover I liked (The Best of DC Comics Blue Ribbon Digest #23 Christmas with the Super Heroes) and proposed it to Tom with some adjustments and he was agreeable. I decided to substitute Superman and Batman and in their place add Flash and Green Lantern.
While I am a big fan of the JSA and it would have been easy to use Earth 2's Jay Garrick and Allan Scott I decided to go with characters who might be more familiar to those receiving cards who are not in the hobby, hence Barry Allan and Hal Jordan.
Tom as expected did a masterful job and then it was off to Glenn Whitmore one of the two colorists I try to use for each year's card. Glenn's colors pop off the card and make it the kind of cheery holiday greeting that should stand out on most folks mantles. Both men did a terrific job and could not have been easier to work with making sure the art was delivered in plenty of time to get it off to my printer and then out to the local post office.
Happy Holidays everyone!
