Marvel Graphic Novel #4: The New Mutants was among the first books published by Marvel to use the full color printing process. The pages contained in this gallery were colored by Glynis Oliver (then Wein) on publication sized photostat pages of Bob McLeod's linework. As opposed to the traditional color guides, full process color art pages were directly photographed to get the color for the publication.
As Bob McLeod explains, "At that time, a comics colorist would use Dr. Martin's watercolor dyes to color photostats of the comic pages, and then at the printer someone did color separations, separating the colors into four layers of acetate: black, red, yellow, and blue. In this case, they printed right from Glynis' colors, without doing separations."
I was fortunate enough to stumble upon these pages at Fanfare Sports & Entertainment. I would love to bring all the color art pages from this book back together. Tom from Fanfare informed me that the pages within this gallery were all the pages he received from Glynis many years ago. If you have knowledge of the whereabouts of the missing pages, or contact information for Glynis Oliver, please let me know. If you know of pages that are happy at their current home, I would also like to know so I can at least know they exist!
Enjoy!
