In 2006 I worked as editor for the Italian edition of Philip Paquet's "Louis Armstrong" book. Paquet is a master of jazz-inspired comics and illustrations. I think that this Flemish artist manages to convey the mood of a smoky jazz club, the passion and hard work of musicians. Maybe because Philip has been a musician too. "Louis Armstrong" is a comic book biography based on Armstrong's memoir "Satchmo". His second title "Snapshots" was a collection of brief portraits of great musicians (Miles Davis, Charlie Parker...) often represented as anthropomorphic animals. And his jazz trilogy went on with "Jelly Roll Morton", published - with 2 CDs included - by the French label Nocturne. Anyway, he has a graphic novel production as well ("Yume" and "Over naar jou").
