Kevin,
Bob Forgione’s work is reflective of his artistic influ-
ences. If his art-work gives you a strange hint of familiarity, there’s a very
big reason. Forgione was an assistant to Jerry Robinson
for years, inking most of Robinson’s Atlas work. Both he
and a young Steve Ditko worked in Robinson’s studio and
absorbed his influence. Additionally, Robinson, Forgione,
Ditko, and Joe Kubert, were all influenced by Mort Me-
skin. So what you are seeing in Forgione’s art is an amal-
gamation and cross-pollination of stylistic influence from
four of the industry’s greatest artists. Forgione, both solo
and inked by Abel, drew about 150 stories in all genres for
Atlas between 1953 and 1957 (plus inking Robinson). In ad-
dition to installments of Speed Carter, he drew 21 installments
of the Iron Mike McGraw feature in Marines in Battle. He
was one of the handful of Atlas artists to return to Mar-
vel in the earliest pre-hero period, drawing eight stories
between 1959 and 1961, the last two published in Tales to
Astonish #26 and #27.

Thanks, Kief! Al Jaffee told me he ghost-penciled a few stories for Chad but this isn't one of them!
Now I see the credit may have come from the GCD. I think it's incorrect.
Nice commission! I think the original cover artist was Pauline Loth, though. Did Ken say he drew this?
