Adequate, even!
(this comment is reserved for only the most mind-staggering, aesthetically stunning and envy-inducing art on CAF, where any other words are... insufficient!)
So great to see this example of peak comics in the collection that loves it. John's art is elegant and expressive, and Stan's writing here is tasteful and succinct. It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings.
Beautifully rendered sequence from one of the greatest teams (Gerber/Colan/Leialoha) in comics hstory!
Wonderful example from Stan's 14-month "picture frame" cover experiment from the 20¢ era! Trimpe/Severin don't get mentioned much when comics' great artist pairings are extolled, but I think they might be the peak Hulk artistic team... to me, at least! Congrats on a great pick-up!
Beautifully realized and expressive art... the skill involved at working out the light and atmosphere here is pretty astonishing!
Splendid, just splendid. I've been saving for something from Karl for months, and now I have to completely rethink my commission request, because you got here first with an identical theme idea (except mine was a Rider Waite Smith-style Judgement card featuring my pet lemur).
I should have guessed when we wore the same thing to the Met Gala that this might be next.
Karl Stevens does wonderful work here, this is very cool, indeed! Congrats on a great idea, beautifully executed!
It's bittersweet that I won't get to see Lemuriwether as the Archangel Gabriel summoning the dead to rise from their graves. On the other hand, her vuvuzella playing is atrocious, so maybe you did me a favor, after all.
Moody, atmospheric storytelling, masterfully rendered... very nice, indeed!
This is a remarkably cool cover, and the sans-trade dress version with the columns and temple lamps is just wonderful. Too cool!
Extraordinary panel! To my mind, Came The Dawn and Nina are Frazetta's great unfinished 1950s materworks. This panel could have been finished had Frank added the fading benday (graduating-tone zipatone film) as he planned. It might be cool to add it digitally for an additional image, but we'll never know what dot density or exact transition from dark to light Frazetta would have settled on with the zip.
Love the gestural flow and economic, juicy linework here. Frazetta certainly deserves the adulation he still receives!
"Rogues In The House" is a longtime favorite of mine (since childhood), and this is just an incredibly cool page, full of passion and drama. Congrats on owning such a grail!
Nice composition, and beautifully rendered... great modern comics art!
Of all the possible ways to render this scene, I can't imagine anyone doing it better than JB. People always comment on Buscema's beautiful and expressive anatomy, but his staging and storytelling are top notch!
Chan provided fine inks on this page, and Simonson's ambitious design and storytelling is well displayed here. It'll be cool to reread these stories someday!
Stellar page from the peak Defenders team. Sal and Klaus's art was a sheer joy to savor each month, and Steve Gerber's stories promised something unexpected, quirky and delightful each time. Congrats on a perfect apex Defenders page!
Wonderful page from Bill Everett's 1965 return-to-comics story! I have page 7 that precedes David's bicycle adornment page 8. This was a quirky and unique run of issues, the likes of which we will never see again. Glad to see you still have it!
JRjr and Layton were indeed a dream team, and this page is a good example of why!
Nice retro update... great idea, beautifully executed!
This is my favorite kind of collector story in our nutty hobby... major congrats, Lee! This is right around when I started formally collecting the book, too, and Andru/Giacoia/Hunt looks better than ever to my presbyopic eyes!
Based on this page, I think it's going to be really great to go back and reread these stories after so many years. Congrats on adding another fine page from a personally meaningful book to the Benarkives!
Ploog WBN is as graily as it gets, and this is a great example!
Respectfully, you are burying the lede in not mentioning that this epic page features four earth-shaterring DAWG panels! Man-Thing, Ezekiel and Maybelle Tork (whose spirit is inhabiting the tree here) are central supporting characters in this critically lauded classic story. But Dawg is the only one to merit an official, individually numbered, one ounce, solid bronze Ploog coin with his image on it!
Congrats on a Ploogtastic page!
Mike Ploog is one of my all-time favorite artists, and held the top spot for decades. He might share it with one or two other masters of the medium, now. This is a wonderful page, and a perfect example of the great man's amazing work!
Lovely, delicate and expressive... Jones was one of a kind.
I remember seeing this version in the Marvel house ads as a kid and thinking "What the heck, why didn't they go with this one? It's by far the superior of the two versions." Also Royer's inks are sufficiently sharp here that I took it to be inked by Joe Sinnott until relatively late in life.
All respect to you and Galactus for reaching for what you want!
Great page, great staging and storytelling!
Dear Robert, I am writing to complain about this page featuring Loki falling out of a high building. I have worked all my life in such a building and have never once.... Aaaaaarrgghhh! *splat*
Great page by an unheralded comics master! I hope you can complete this story someday, or I hope that you already have!
This is just superb... so great!
Peak comics! Congrats on adding this wonderful page to your fine collection!
Great cover by a great artist from a great era! Big congrats!
Just a beautifully staged and rendered page by Gene, and Stan's "now Cap is a hipster for ten minutes" is a wonderful sign of the times. Great page from a great issue from a great era!
Aaah, this takes me back to a simpler time when a syringe full of liquid LSD from a buxom femme fatale didn't set you back an arm and a leg. I love stuff like this, and the period vibe is unbeatable!
Great cover... also from my own childhood collecting era... and great story! I am delusional enough to believe that certain art belongs in certain collections, and it makes me happy to hear that this art found its way home. It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings!
This is a great world building page and an unexpected treat for fans of the interwoven marvel universe... also, it looks cool!
