Glad you appreciate it Ruben! His breakdowns were really solid. Looked like much of the work he ever did. A fun way to work with another artist, but crazy intimidating with Ditko! Fortunately he gave me a positive review. Feel free to add his pencils to your post.
Ruben, I looked around and found the xerox of those pencil breakdowns. I inked on all of the originals. I wish CAF let you post an image to a comment, but all I can do is provide a link. I'll let you be the judge of whether I made it more "dynamic and less quirky". To the best of my ability I followed Ditko's inking style without truly redrawing. Just embellishing.

Thanks Bill! I'm historical but not Finito yet! ;-)
John Paul had already been working like this for years. His pencils called for it also when I inked him on Challengers of the Unknown before this, and with Shawn Martinbrough inking him before me.
Alex Ross had seen that work when we lived near each other and he was so taken by it that he asked me, and I think John afterwards, to do the series with John.
At the time he felt that if he only worked in ink, that this look was similar to what he would do himself.
That's one of Steve Rude's great skills.
Thanks! Was an awesome project to work on!
OK, I remember, but I've heard similar stories before. Like a guy finding a Punisher cover of mine in a shop back room or something. Generally any story is divided between artists, and i actually did finishes on these issues. Not just inked them. After doing so I sent the original art to Marvel. So Liam's cut of pages would have been sent to him after publication. As far as I remember he still lived in the UK then.
Store room.....And I see I didn't sign it. So, I would have to have to assume it once belonged to breakdown artist Liam Sharp. Did you find it in the UK?
Commenting over two years later! Yes, my wife Linda Lessmann coloring my work on the Badger led to our marriage. We married that year after working together since 1985. I had to be patient :-).
That bike is my french Motebacne bike bought in the mid 70's.
That makes sense. I've done proposal art for a specific projects. This was a little more casual than that, though it's intention was made clear. Not something I usually do, or had to do. I get asked to be on projects purely out of belief I can do. Afterwards I'll do many practice pieces for myself before starting.
At the time I was in between gigs, as you always are as a freelancer, so with several samples, including this one, I proposed to Archie Goodwin I do a Batman story. He told me the the samples were
unnecessary, and offered me a LOTDK job.
I agree! We've had it for almost 38 years. But on sale soon.
Actualy it's the cover to BADGER #3, Devil’s Due/1First Comics.
I love the second panel on this page displaying the shadowed picture frames on the the wall. Simple, yet full of depth and mood.
That would make sense because he was not known to sell his art then. I'm sure he got all of his Phantom 2040 art as I did.
I guess you don't remember if you bought it from me or not on Ebay. My user name would have been inner-view back then. I usually sign art, but if a dealer bought a pile from me they may not have asked me to sign them.
Looks like you got one that Ditko owned because if I had sold it it would have been signed by me. I don't think any of the Phantom 2040 pages he owned were for sale before he passed. At least I didn't see any beforehand.
In the first two panels the character Fred is based on the serial killer Ed Gein. In the 5th panel background you can see Jack Nicholson as he looked in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest.
Just know that that book was printed pretty badly, as were other one-shots Marvel did at the time printed on bad paper where the blacks are faded causing color to overwhelm sometimes.
That page is a combination of textures done with paper towel, of course dry brush, and lastly single edge razor blade to scrape out the skipping white lines. All at my attempt to replicate a sandstorm.
Ever see this FB post on Robert Downey Jr's page?-

I just used an inflation calculator and today that's still only about 68.00 in 2021 money, so the drunk joke still works :-). But really, glad you still have it!
Thank you Ettore! I hope it gets reprinted in the States someday.
That's for sure! A darker more down and out Cap, but triumphant in the end!
Great description. Was originally my page in trading Punisher art with Zaffino through Dixon in the 90's. Sold it in 2012. Glad you have it :-).
You're welcome. Wish it was for another reason, but as a BWS fan myself I understand.
I was a big fan of those Billy Graham Black Panther comics! Was nothing like them at the time.
Yes it is, and will soon be someone else's to appreciate.
Yes, it was nice seeing John ink his own work on occasion on Earth-X.
Mark Badger did a wonderful job coloring that novel! 'Color guide' though would actually be the wrong description. As you described, it is the actual color art used in the book.
