Hughes, Sam
Hi all, Sam here! I began collecting in 1982 and have seen a lot of wonderful things come, go, or get passed over. I was totally hooked from the first time I saw a piece of original art. It was a Micronauts interior page and nothing special, but it was a game changing paradigm shift for me. I had always bought comics primarily for the artwork, but this was something completely different! You could actually see blue lines, unerased pencils and shades of ink in the brush strokes. From then on it was a rabid chase through TBG, CGB, auctions like Wooley's, Russ Cochran's and Phillip Weiss. As I lived in South Florida at the time, I was segregated from the glitzy places like San Diego, Big Apple and Chicago. A friend and I got to Atlanta where Kelly Freas had some little sketches for 5 bucks apiece. He was so nice! There was also a huge stack of Ditko pages which I poured over for a long, long time and finally picked two. This was my first big mind blowing score! Once I got a taste of the good stuff it was your typical pub crawl from show to show in search of a new fix.
